Proof-of-Work (PoW)

Definition

Proof-of-work (PoW) is Bitcoin's consensus mechanism: the requirement that miners expend real computational energy to earn the right to add a block to the blockchain. By anchoring the ledger's history to physical cost, PoW makes rewriting Bitcoin's record economically irrational โ€” an attacker would need to out-spend the entire honest network, continuously.

How Proof-of-Work Functions

Miners assemble candidate blocks and then race to find a nonce โ€” a number that, when hashed with the block header through SHA-256, produces an output below a network-defined target. There is no shortcut: finding a valid hash requires quadrillions of guesses per second across the network, which is why specialized ASIC hardware and cheap electricity dominate the industry.
