How to Buy Metaplanet Stock (3350 / MTPLF)

Buying Japan's Bitcoin treasury giant from the US or anywhere else โ€” the tickers, the brokers, the risks โ€” explained by a US crypto industry veteran.

Metaplanet is the most interesting Bitcoin treasury story outside the United States, full stop. A small Tokyo hotel company reinvented itself as "Japan's MicroStrategy," stacked its way into the top three corporate Bitcoin holders on the planet, and picked up a $3.3 trillion asset manager as its largest shareholder along the way. American investors ask me about it constantly โ€” usually followed by "wait, how do I even buy a Japanese stock?" This guide answers exactly that: what Metaplanet is, the three ways to buy it depending on where you live, and the risks that come with this very specific trade.

What Is Metaplanet?

Metaplanet Inc. trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticker 3350, with a US over-the-counter listing under MTPLF on OTCQX. It's Japan's first publicly listed Bitcoin treasury company: Bitcoin is its core reserve asset, and management's north-star KPI is BTC Yield โ€” the growth in Bitcoin per share.

The numbers are serious. As of June 30, 2026, Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC (acquired for roughly $3.8 billion), making it the third-largest corporate holder behind Strategy and Twenty One Capital, with stated targets of 100,000 BTC by end-2026 and 210,000 by end-2027. Unlike pure buy-and-hold vehicles, it runs a Bitcoin Income Generation business โ€” selling options against its position โ€” that produced about $10.85 million in revenue in Q2 2026 alone, effectively lowering its cost per coin. In July 2026 it completed the ยฅ2.1 billion acquisition of Siiibo Securities and launched Metaplanet Securities, a licensed digital-asset investment bank building Bitcoin-backed credit products. And in a landmark institutional endorsement, Capital Group disclosed a 10.6% stake in July 2026 โ€” the largest shareholder on the register.

How to Buy Metaplanet Stock: Three Routes

Route 1 โ€” OTCQX ticker MTPLF (easiest for Americans). Most major US brokers โ€” Fidelity, Schwab, Interactive Brokers โ€” let you buy MTPLF like any OTC stock: fund your account, search "MTPLF," and place a limit order. Two things to know: OTC spreads are wider than exchange listings, and liquidity is thinner during US hours since the primary market is Tokyo. Limit orders aren't optional here; they're essential. Note that some app-based brokers restrict OTC securities, so check yours first.

Route 2 โ€” Tokyo Stock Exchange ticker 3350 (best pricing). Brokers with international market access โ€” Interactive Brokers is the usual answer for Americans โ€” let you buy the primary listing directly in Japanese yen during TSE hours (7:00 PM to 1:00 AM Eastern, previous day). You'll get the tightest spreads and real-time liquidity, but you're taking on yen currency exposure and possibly a currency-conversion fee.

Route 3 โ€” For investors in Japan. Any domestic broker (SBI, Rakuten, Monex) carries 3350 like any other TSE listing.

Whichever route you choose: fractional buying is generally not available for OTC/foreign listings, but Metaplanet's per-share price (a few hundred yen โ€” roughly a couple of US dollars) makes whole shares accessible to any budget.

The Risks โ€” Read Before You Buy

Premium and NAV risk. Like every treasury stock, Metaplanet can trade far above or below the value of its Bitcoin. Its average cost basis sits near $89,000 per coin, and at 2026's lower Bitcoin prices the position has carried a substantial unrealized loss โ€” the stock has been correspondingly brutal, falling from its 2025 highs to the low-ยฅ200s.

Dilution and leverage. The 100,000-BTC target is funded through aggressive equity and debt issuance. When BTC Yield is positive, existing shareholders gain Bitcoin per share; when the machine sputters, dilution cuts the other way.

Currency risk. You're holding a yen-denominated asset whose treasury is dollar-priced Bitcoin โ€” a three-currency sandwich that can help or hurt independent of Bitcoin's move.

Execution risk on the new businesses. Metaplanet Securities and the Project Nova credit products are genuinely novel โ€” and unproven. Treat the pivot from "holder" to "Bitcoin investment bank" as upside optionality, not a given.

Metaplanet vs. the Alternatives

If you just want Bitcoin exposure in a brokerage account, a spot ETF (IBIT, FBTC) is cleaner. If you want the leveraged treasury trade, compare Metaplanet against Strategy (MSTR) and Twenty One Capital (XXI) โ€” Metaplanet's edges are its income-generating options business, its regulated Japanese securities arm, and Asia-market exposure; its drawbacks are OTC friction for Americans and currency risk. Sovereign accumulation is the same thesis at nation-state scale โ€” track who holds what on our global reserve tracker, from the United States to El Salvador.

Bottom Line

Americans can own Metaplanet in two minutes via MTPLF with a limit order, or properly via Tokyo's 3350 through an international broker. It's the highest-conviction, highest-octane Bitcoin treasury outside the US โ€” institutional validation and a real income business on one side, dilution, currency, and drawdown risk on the other. Size it like the volatile satellite position it is.
